Kathia Ballestero Pernudi

Graduating with a Bachelor’s in Law from the University of Costa Rica in 1992, she began her professional career as a member of the Public Defender’s Office in 1989, where she distinguished herself as a tireless advocate for her clients.

She has been a member of the Costa Rican Bar Association since 1992.

She has 30 years of experience in criminal litigation and worked concurrently for approximately three years as a Defender of Victims of Sexual Harassment within the Judiciary, starting this role between 2010 and 2012.

She was a consultant in Criminal Procedure Law and Criminal Law in Nicaragua, Honduras, and Mexico in 2000, 2004, and 2005, respectively, for the Public Defender Offices of these three countries. This was during the process of creating or strengthening these institutions under the changes of the new accusatory paradigm in criminal proceedings in Latin America, which began in Costa Rica with the 1996 Criminal Procedure Code.

She was the first director of the Public Defense Magazine from its creation in 2001 until 2004.

She taught General Process Theory courses at the University of Costa Rica in 2004 and 2005. She also taught a course on “General Criminal Law” in 2008 and for the Master’s program at the International Cooperation University (UCI) in partnership with the University of Barcelona. She gave the course “Gender and Criminal Law,” which she designed.

She graduated from the University of Barcelona, Faculty of Law, with a doctorate in “Law in a Globalized Society” with a specialization in Legal-Criminal Sociology. She wrote a thesis to obtain the Advanced Studies Diploma (DEA) titled “Women who act in self-defense: The problem of its lack of recognition in Criminal Law,” Barcelona 2007.

She joined the firm in 2019, focusing on criminal litigation.
